The World Skateboarding Championships are returning to South Africa! The 2014 Kimberley Diamond Cup will see the best professional street and vert skateboarders from around the world competing in Kimberley for a shot at a world championship title and their share of over R5 million prize purse, the largest single-event prize purse in skateboarding! Live on Supersport!
South Africa’s skateboarding fraternity is expected to descend on the world-class Kumba Skate Plaza in Kimberley on Saturday, 8 Marc, for the Kimberley Diamond cup, the biggenst skateboarding competition on African Soil.  The Midway Mayhem is the first national Grand Slam event of the year with three other national Grand Slams to follow in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The Grand Slam events were created to share the magic and ambiance of the KDC world championships with skating enthusiasts around the country.  These events are designed to develop and recognize South Africa’s best skateboarders.  The world championships in the Northern Cape and subsequent global broadcast coverage have helped to make Kimberley a household name to every skateboarder around the world.  This weekend will be no different as top international pro skaters such as Grant Taylor, Cory Kennedy, Raven Tershy, Raney Beres and Ronnie Sandoval will be in Kimberley on a promotional shoot for Thrasher magazine and will pop in at the skate plaza to show off some world-class skating.

According to Tim McFerran of World Skateboarding GP, it is an honour that a magazine of Thrasher’s calibre is including Kimberley on their South African itinerary.  “Thrasher Magazine is an international skateboarding magazine with a readership of millions of people each month through their magazine and website.  The fact that they finish their South African tour in Kimberley shows the international impact that KDC is delivering for Kimberley.  The Northern Cape has become a particularly hot skateboarding destination.  In addition to having one of the best skate parks in the world, it has quickly developed a following for a now famous ditch that these guys are prepared to travel halfway around the world to skate.  It’s great that this event has popularized Kimberley and grown the skateboarding industry so much.  I am very excited about this year,” said McFerran.

During the run-up to this year’s world championships, the Skateboarding for Hope tour will criss-cross the country to introduce South African youth to the amazing sport of skateboarding.  Tour stops include Johannesburg, Pretoria, Jeffreys Bay, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, De Aar, Soweto, Upington, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Springbok, George and Kuruman.  Grand Slam events will also be hosted in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

The Midway Mayhem carries a total prize purse of R50 000 as well as a coveted wild card entry into the amateur division of the world championships, which will take place in Kimberley from 1 – 5 October.  Midway Mayhem will feature a unique format and programme with amateur vert and street contests, a women’s street competition and the Rider Cup team contest.

Twenty-four skateboarders, including the top ten finishers from last year’s Kimberley Diamond Cup will battle it out in eight heats on the street section.  The top 13 skaters from the Midway Mayhem qualifiers will be able to join the action.

The Rider Cup team competition will see 12 teams of four skaters taking part in the single-elimination, head-to-head bracket format contest.  Each team will have four minutes to impress the judges and qualify for a spot at the KDC Rider Cup in October.

The Women’s Street contest features an open entry jam format competition, with cash prizes for the top 3 skaters. Skaters will be given 4 minutes each per jam on each section of the park.

Skateboarding enthusiasts and members of the public are encouraged to come to Kimberley to support the nation’s best skateboarders and to experience the excitement and danger of skateboarding. Admission to the skate park is free and camping at the adjacent Big Hole Caravan Park is free of charge all weekend.  This is also the perfect opportunity for visitors to enjoy the abundance of activities and amazing tourism sights that Kimberley has to offer.
