  • The Big Hole Ghost Walk is being re-launched on 31 October 2014 – Halloween!

Access to certain buildings has finally been sorted out so it’s A for Away.

The very same night the Occidental is having their Zombie evening so all are encouraged to wear suitable clothing for the walk. The chances are good there shall prizes for the best (worst?) dressed Zombies.

The Ghost Walk starts at the Star of the West at 18h30, please be there by 18h15. From the Star it’s a stroll up the mine dump, then along Parsons Lane and into the mine museum grounds.

In the museum several buildings will be entered including the VERY haunted Gowies Corner and the Sir David Harris Ballroom. Plus more…

The cost is R180 per person and at the end of the tour the Occidental will be delighted to give you a snack, either a Schwarma or a hamburger of sorts. It’s part of the deal for Halloween.

The Zombie evening at the Occidental starts at 21h00, and with the tour scheduled to stop at 21h30 the timing is brilliant…

Numbers will be limited to 30.

Established around 1870, the Star of the West was originally a corrugated iron shack were thirsty miners paid a tuppence for a beer and a half-a-penny for a glass of wine. Many myths and legends prevail, of which “Madam” Diamond Lil is the most famous. A picture of her can be seen hanging on the wall. The Star of the West is a national monument, and a great tourism attraction for many around the world, and is equally well known on various continents. Legend has it the bar counter and rich wooden fittings were salvaged and brought to the city by sailors who survived the wreck of their ship, Star of the West, on the West Coast. In recent years these have been restored and the pub is an excellent place to soak up a little history. There is an exact replica of the “Star of the West” in Australia.
