Please Join Us for Substance Abuse Awareness Day

Substance abuse is endemic in the Northern Cape and affects children and adults alike.

The scourge of it continues to ravage our communities, families and particularly, our youth; the more so, as it goes hand in hand with poverty, crime, reduced productivity, unemployment, dysfunctional family life, escalation of chronic diseases and premature death…

There are many reasons why people abuse illegal substances or prescription drugs. Past studies used to point to “having fun” as the number-one reason teens used drugs, but more recent studies show that teens are using drugs to solve problems like stress, low self-esteem, self-medication, misinformation and easy access. Adults often use it to self-medicate symptoms of depression or anxiety but it can worsen these very symptoms, in the long run, and the user is always the last person to accept the disease concept.

    Substance Abuse & Mental Health
Recovery from Substance Abuse does not happen overnight. It is an on-going process that can take months even years and relapse is common.
RECOVERY DEPENDS ON TREATING BOTH THE ADDICTION AND THE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM AND GETTING COMBINED ADDICTION – and PSYCHIATRY TREATMENT FROM THE SAME MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM.
“Educating people on the risks of abusing drugs and alcohol can enable them to make better choices.”
