    1980 Uprising – Memorial Lecture

    Venue: Mayibuye Multipurpose Centre
    Time: 18h00
    Date: 08 September 2015

During the school boycotts of September 1980 thousands of school textbooks were dumped at the Bantu Batho Centre in Galeshewe and a local baker’s van was looted and set alight while buses were pelted with stones. The police used tear-gas to disperse the crowd. Twenty-two learners were detained but only five were eventually charged and convicted in 1983. Sello Neville Motlhabakwe, Johannes Kers, Eugene Mokgoasi, Zenzele Hlatswayo and Ben Mlulami Fani received between 10 and 15 years for charges that included terrorism, arson, attempted arson and housebreaking.
