Local DIY act Make-Overs on Tour: ‘Hit the ground running’ in March/April
In association with Concerts SA, one of South Africa’s most beloved DIY bands, Make-Overs, are about to embark on their sixth local South African tour, ‘Hit the Ground Running’.

Make-Overs will be spending the next 8 weeks playing numerous shows across SA, the first 4 weeks in March will mostly cover Gauteng. During the first two weeks in April they will be on the move and appearing in the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and possibly the Free State and North West. Once they get back to Gauteng, they have yet more shows planned until the end of April.

With the Make-Overs disregard for music industry norms and rules, more shows will probably be added on-the-go to the already astonishing 17 shows planned… so it’s best to keep checking in on their website or social media changes for more news.

The tour also highlights an array of interesting local and international acts joining them on stages across SA. More will be released soon, but suffice to say a little bird told me Psych Night SA is involved in one of the Cape Town shows, and they are bringing in a special guest from overseas. With incredibly affordable ticket prices, ranging from R30 to R100 depending on the show/town/line-up, and with pre-sale tickets available on Quicket for some of the bigger shows (early birds almost always pay less), you are quickly running out of excuses to not go and experience this intense two-piece for yourself.

Things kick off with the Burger Revolution show, which sees more than 20 different countries pull together on the 11th of March to host interesting left of centre music groups in their specific town or country, and end off with That 70’s Fest, a one day festival in Kempton Park with limited space (only 400 tickets will be available) and a slew of interesting local acts.

Make-Overs are a unique duo of redheaded musical malcontents who hail from the grey suburban wasteland of Kilner Park, South Africa. Formed in mid 2010 with Martinique on drums/vocals and Andreas on guitar/vocals, the couple hit the South African scene with a frenzied live act that cuts through you like a machete. With elements of rock, pop, punk and noise and an intense, energy-driven performance, the Make-Overs can fit a variety of bills, venues, and stages – from opening for Thee Oh Sees at the Empty Bottle in Chicago, playing at the renowned Memphis festival – Gonerfest, notorious Hozac Blackout Fest in Chicago, Oppikoppi in South Africa, in-store shows at popular local hangouts like Bric-A-Brac, Permanent and Used Kids Records, basement shows, art exhibitions and even public access TV appearances like Chic-A-Go-Go.

Frequently noted as one of South Africa’s most hard-working and prolific acts, it is no surprise that in 2016 alone they recorded and released both their 9th and 10th full-length studio albums. The 9th album “Try Me”, already available online and on CD, is also set to be released on 12” limited edition vinyl through Columbus Ohio’s Heel Turn Records, and their 10th album “Dichotomy” has just been made available on Bandcamp. They were awarded a Music Mobility Fund from Concerts SA and SAMRO to do an extensive local tour in April and they will be embarking on their 4th USA tour to promote their recent releases later in 2017. They also have a 7” coming out on French label Six Tonnes De Chair later this year.

Due to their astonishing work ethic, from producing and recording all their own albums, releasing on multiple formats (CD, tape, digital and vinyl) and touring vigorously both locally and internationally, it is no surprise that they are becoming known as one of South Africa’s most beloved independent bands.

The Make-Overs Tour ‘Hit the Ground Running’ is supported by the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism administered by Concerts SA which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
