CANSA Relay for Life is a global event that unites communities all over the world in the fight against cancer.
Relay for Life is a very special event, during which cancer Survivors and their Caregivers, are celebrated during a special VIP function and celebratory laps, loved once lost to cancer are remembered during the candle-lighting Luminaria Ceremony, and all participants commit to fighting back against cancer.
RELAY begins when the sun is setting, it symbolises the time that a person has been diagnosed as having cancer.
The day is getting darker
This represents the cancer patient’s state of mind – they feel that their life is coming to an end.
As the evening goes on it gets colder and darker, this symbolises the emotions of the cancer patient.
Round about 1:00 am to 2:00 am it represents the time treatment starts – exhaustion, feeling sick, not wanting to go on, possibly wanting to give up.
As a participant, you have been walking and feel much the same way.
You are tired, want to sleep, maybe even want to go home, but you cannot stop or give up.
The sun rising symbolizes the end of treatment for the cancer patient. They see the light at the end of the tunnel and know that life will go on.
The morning light symbolizes a new day full of life and excitement, a new beginning for the cancer patient.
As a participant, you will feel the brightness of the morning and know that the end of the RELAY is close at hand.
At Relay, teams of 10-15 friends, neighbours, families and co-workers commit to having at least one team member walking around the track at all times for 12 hours, because cancer neither slumbers nor sleeps. Teams are encouraged to raise funds in support of the fight against cancer. Teams camp out overnight around the track.
On behalf of the Cancer Association of South Africa, Kimberley I would like to invite you, your family friends and staff to enter a team.
Relay For Life gives you the opportunity to show your support for Cancer Survivors and join in the fight to end the disease.
Entry: Corporate – R100pp, Schools – R50 per scholar
We suggest that the team then do fundraising for CANSA additionally to raise more funds.
