The name Tamar comes from the Bible. Tamar was the beautiful daughter of King David. She was raped by one of her half-brothers and later committed suicide because of the lack of support from her family.

Fast forward to the 1990s. An Anglican priest was called to assist a young rape victim and realized no facility existed in Kimberley to assist victims of abuse and rape. Although the police had a trauma center for immediate assistance, a place was needed for extended counselling and accommodation. Together with ladies from the church, FAMSA and Femnet, Tamar Shelter Society was founded in 1991 and was registered as a NPO in 1999.

    Victims to be assisted:
    Domestic Violence
    Rape Victims
    Police protection
    Child Abuse
    Emotional Abuse
    Mental Abuse
    Sexual Abuse
