  • How did Pirates get it’s name?

“The Pirates Club was, in fact, one of Kimberley’s most successful charitable ventures.  It had been founded, almost accidently, in the early 1800′s by G.J.A. Danford, the ‘Pirate King’  Danford, an indefatigable organiser of charity concerts, is said to have thought up an idea of the Club after staging a special production of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ (a play not operetta) with a group of youngsters.  So successful was this show that the funds raised from it had been used by Danford to establish a gymnasium for his ‘Pirate Children’  Later a Club House was built.”
