Midnight Train to Motown returns to Kimberley
A highlight on Flamingo’s winter entertainment calendar is the return of renowned and acclaimed entertainer/impresario Jayson King with a refreshed production of Midnight Train to Motown on 6 July 2019.
Midnight Train to Motown is a vibrant tribute show featuring some of Cape Town’s finest entertainers, performing the songs of famous 1960s legends and 1980s superstars such as Luther Vandros, Whitney Houston, Peabo Bryson and others.
Motown music was founded by Berry Gordy Jnr in the city of Detroit (motor city) USA where R&B, Rock ‘n Roll and Soul music took root and was the driving force behind artists like The Jackson 5, Diana Ross & the Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, The Commodores, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Smokey Robinson, and so the list goes on.
Bringing the music of Motown to life on stage at Bar 129 is Cape Town based, The Pretenders, who are well known to millions of television viewers who saw them perform on Noot vir Noot with Johan Stemmet, Felecia Mabuza on E-TV, Tony Sanderson’s Chuckle ‘n Chat Show, Dali Tambo’s People of the South, Good Morning South Africa, The Breakfast Club and Pasella.
Lead singer Ruth Knight is the vocal powerhouse as she belts out voice stylings of Natalie Cole and Gladys Knight. The special guest artist is Belinda Qaqamba Fassie who plays tribute to Diana Ross, Grace Jones and Gladys Knight.
The show is conceptualized, produced and directed by Jayson King who has enjoyed an illustrious 59-year long career in music. Now 74 years old, he has performed all over South Africa for the past 26 years with his production of The Great Pretenders, one of the most notable tribute shows with a musical lifespan from the 1960s to now. King, who is the MC and host of Midnight Train to Motown, was called “Mr Showbiz” by the Star newspaper during 2003. King introduces some of Elvis Presley’s and Wilson Pickett’s, Soul and Rock ‘n Roll hits which were a great inspiration to Motown’s recording artists.
