I had just read Ferial Haffejees column about the causes of Edgars failure when I walked into Sheet Street the Diamond Pavilion in Kimberley with my wife. She wanted kitchen curtains. A male packer was busy packing the shelf where the curtains were stacked. The packer showed no interest in assisting us. My wife had to squeeze herself past him to get to the curtains. There were not enough of the colour she wanted and she was looking through the shelves for what she wanted. The sales assistant did not once ask if he could be of assistance. I guess customer assistance does not exist at Sheet Street.
